Lviv Society Bringing Gold Back from Beijing
Despite modest ambitions the 2008 Beijing Olympics turned out to be something of a Ukrainian success story, with the team finishing 11th in the overall rankings with a grand total of 27 medals. Ukraine’s sportsmen won a total of 7 gold, 5 silver and 15 bronze medals, a better return than in both 2004 and 2000, when the Ukrainian medal haul was 23 medals on each occasion. Lviv’s athletes did more than their share of the winning in Beijing, with local hero Oleksandr Petriv, whose ice man nerves made for compulsive viewing as he set a new Olympic record in the rapid fire 25 metre shooting discipline on his way to an impressive gold medal. Upon his return to his home town Petriv and his fellow Lviv Olympians received a civic reception in city hall and the thanks of a grateful administration.
