International friendly match, Ukraine vs. Romania, May 29 at 20.30, Ukraina Stadium, Lviv
Ukraine may have missed out on this summer’s World Cup Finals by a whisker (they lost a two legged play-off to Greece 1-0), but there will be international quality football action in Lviv this summer as the national team take on fellow East European footballing powerhouse Romania in a friendly match which will pit two sides both of which are currently undergoing rebuilding processes. Lviv’s new coach Myron Markevich will be looking to see how some of the country’s new crop of emerging young talent fairs in a full-blown international setting, and he may well want to ease some of Karpaty Lviv’s best young Ukrainians into the starting eleven for this tie on home turf. As co-hosts of Euro 2012 Ukraine automatically qualify for the tournament, meaning that new national trainer Markevich will have no competitive matches between now and then in which to fine tune his squad. Instead, he will be forced to rely increasingly on friendly encounters like this one.
