Karpaty Lviv vs Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, Ukrainian Premier League,
28 March at 18.00, Ukraina Stadium

Lviv’s talisman side Karpaty go into this crucial clash with fellow Europa Cup qualification chasers Dnipro with the West Ukrainian side lying in 6th place, just outside the European berths. They are level on points with 4th placed Dnipro and will be looking to build on a formidable recent run of form which has seen the Lviv side win three of their last five games, including a vital home win over high-flying Metalist Kharkiv. Thanks to Ukraine’s strong showing in European competition in 2009 (Ukraine provided the UEFA Cup with three quarter finalists, two semi-finalists and the eventual winners), Ukraine has been awarded an additional berth for the 2010-11 season, making this the ideal opportunity for Karpaty to break their decade-long European exile. Lviv have not enjoyed a European campaign since the team’s dismal first round exit from the UEFA Cup in 1999 and the fanatical supporters who form the core of the Karpaty Ultras would like nothing better than to be able to plot out a European strategy  for the coming autumn campaign. If Lviv are to qualify for European football next year they will have to beat sides like Dnipro, making this game hugely important for the West Ukrainian standard bearers. With a side crammed full  of young Ukrainian talent, a European breakthrough could provide Karpaty with the momentum required to push the club towards a level of achievement more in keeping with their status as the leading club side in Right Bank Ukraine
