Double date with Dynamo Kyiv

  • Double date with Dynamo Kyiv
Issue 13, May 2009.

This month will see Lviv’s two Ukrainian Premier League teams taking on table-topping Dynamo Kyiv as the Ukrainian capital city’s talisman side looks to bounce back from its UEFA Cup semi-final heartbreak by securing the domestic league title in style. Dynamo is currently 12 points clear of arch-rivals and current champions Shakhtar Donetsk at the top of the table, and will be hoping that they can wrap up the formalities of their latest league title while in Lviv for this double-header. Kyiv lost their epic UEFA Cup semi-final clash against Shakhtar to a last-minute winner in Donetsk in early May, shattering the club’s ambitions of adding to their two European trophy victories, but success in the UPL would be some consolation for the side and would bring them tangible results from what has been a highly promising season which has seen them rebuild their reputation as a force to be reckoned with following years of under-achievement.
The two top-flight Lviv teams continue to languish in the lower reaches of the UPL, meanwhile, and although neither side appears to be in danger of relegation, both Karpaty and F.C. Lviv will be keen to put on a strong showing against the champions-in-waiting. Expect Lviv’s football fan ultras to be out in force for both ties as they look to out-shout their rivals from the capital, making this brace of fixtures the footballing highlight of the early summer Ukrainian calendar and a fitting finale to the domestic season.
