Anastasia Wozniak – April’s Athlete of the Month

Leopolitan Anastasia Wozniak was awarded Lviv’s Athlete of the Month for April based on her performance as part of the Ukrainian rhythmic gymnastic team at the World Cup in Tashkent, Uzbekistan last month.

Kyokushing Karate Championship

Ministry of Defense Summer Sports Training Center SKA played hosted the KWF Kyokushing Karate Championship for grown-ups, juniors and women on April 8th. The event was organized by the Lviv regional KWF Kyokushing Karate federation and personally federation’s president Volodymyr Rohansky (2nd Dan).

Lviv Region Bodybuilding Championships

Some of Western Ukraine’s strongest and fittest athletes flexed their goods at Lviv Region Bodybuilding Open Cup Championships at Lviv’s G. Hotkevych Palace of Culture on April 2nd. The event attracted more than 100 athletes to compete in a variety of categories, including events specifically for juniors and veterans.

March was Magic for Karpaty FC

March was a month to remember for Karpaty FC, as the team went undefeated in five matches and unveiled their new kits. It has been a trying season for Lviv’s beloved boys in green, as the team has been fighting relegation from early on due to a six point penalty imposed by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee for failure to clear their debts with former Bosnian midfielder Semir Štilić.

Veronika Marchenko – March’s Athlete of the Month

Lviv’s European champion archer Veronika Marchenko was named Lviv’s Athlete of the Month for March for her dominating performances at the European Indoor Championships last month. Marchenko cruised through the tournament defeating her opponents by a combined score of 24:4, including a 6:0 thrashing of her Russian opponent in the final to be named European champion in the Individual Recurve event. Marchenko also assisted the Ukrainian team capture bronze in the Team Recurve event by dominating Russia 6:0.

Young Lviv Archer is European Champion

Lviv’s young Archery phenom Veronika Marchenko crushed her Russian opponent 6:0 to capture gold in the Individual Recurve at the European Indoor Championships in Vittel, France on March 12. The 23-year-old Olympian cruised through the tournament defeating France’s Tiffany Bankert 6:0 in the 1/8 final, Poland’s Violeta Mischor 6:2 in the quarterfinal, and France’s Angelina Koende 6:2 in her semifinal.

Arena Lviv Trades One Donetsk Tenant for Another

Leopolitan football fans will have a new team to watch after Olimpik Donetsk signed on to play at Arena Lviv for the remainder of the Ukrainian Premier League championship. The team replaces Shakhtar Donetsk, who moved their operations to abandoned Metalist Stadium in Kharkiv, empty since the former tenants folded last year. While Olimpik may not bring in the prime Champions and Europa League matchups that Shakhtar did, the team looks set to play in the Ukrainian League’s new “championship round” against the country’s other top 5 teams. Olimpik currently sits in 5th place on 29 points with 3 games remaining in the opening round. The top 5 of the 6 teams in the championship round will qualify for either the Champions or Europa League.

Tatiana Klimchenko – Lviv’s February Athlete of the Month

Up-and-coming Leopolitan cyclist Tatiana Klimchenko was awarded Lviv’s Athlete of the Month Award in February for her performance at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships.
