Karate Tournament for Children & Youth

Lviv’s Pivdenny Expo Centre hosted the Kyokushing Karate Tournament for Children and Youth on April 25-26. The event was organized by the local Kanku sports club. Founded in 1994, the Kanku club is considered to be Lviv’s oldest and most decorated martial arts organization.

5th Gorgany Half Marathon

Lviv was host to the annual Gorgany Half Marathon last month as runners in many different categories (men, women, 60+, and others) participated in the 21 kilometre or 4 kilometre races. Runners were treated to some of the city’s most scenic scenery as they traced their ways through Lviv’s picturesque parks, tranquil Vynnyky Forest, and bustling city centre. The Gorgany Half Marathon is one of Lviv’s leading spring sports events and regularly attracts some of the finest professional and amateur athletes from across Western Ukraine.

European Canoe Sprint Championships

Breaking news:The Leopolitan Taras Mishuk won two medals at European Canoe Sprint Championships, which were held in Račice, Czech Republic from April 30 – May 3 and attracted nearly 850 athletes from 35 countries to compete in 23 different disciplines. The Ukrainian national team got off to a blistering start as they won a complete set of medals – one gold, one silver, and two bronze – in only the first two days of competition.

Friendly match for Ukrainian football team

Just days after hanging with a world class Spain side in a disappointing 0:1 draw in Seville in UEFA Euro 2016 qualification action, our national team took on Latvia in an international friendly match hosted here at Arena Lviv. A confident Ukrainian side led by Andriy Yarmolenko and former FC Karpaty Lviv defender Artem Fedetskyi looked to hone their skills and practice their formations against a squad that has never defeated our boys in blue and yellow.

22-Year-Old Ukrainian Becomes Women’s World Champion

Mariya Muzychuk, a 22-year-old student of a chess school in Stryi (Lviv Region), was recently crowned the 15th Women’s World Chess Champion after defeating Russian Natalia Pogonina 2.5-1.5 at the FIDE Women’s Chess World Championships. The result was never much in doubt; Mariya dominated the match, was never behind in any individual game, and nearly decided the set in the third game. Maria is a two-time Ukrainian Champion (2012 & 2013), played on Ukraine’s 2013 World and European Team Champions, and helped Ukraine to bronze in the 2012 and 2014 Chess Olympiads. She is the younger sister of Anna Muzychuk, a GM since 2012, reigning Women’s World Blitz Champion, and currently ranked 4th in the world. With the win, Maria also becomes a GM.

Fed Cup: Ukraine Narrowly Misses Playoffs

Ukrainian women’s tennis has a long and rich history, and yet its Fed Cup team – which sees its top female players take on top women’s players from other nations – has yet to find sustained success. Despite Ukrainian players regularly featuring in the world’s top 100 players, including the likes of the Bondarenko sisters (Alona, Kateryna, and Valeria), Tatiana Perebiynis, Viktoriya Kutuzova, Elena Tatarkova, Yuliana Fedak – and more recently, Elina Svitolina and Lesia Tsurenko – Ukraine’s Fed Cup team has only once qualified for the prestigious World Group stage in the yearly Fed Cup tournament, and that was back in 2010.
