Lviv’s Carpathians Host Para Nordic World Cup Event

Recently added as a World Cup venue, Lviv region’s Western Rehabilitation & Sports Centre in the beautiful Carpathian Mountains hosted the World Para Nordic Skiing & Biathlon Championships from January 12-20. The event brought together over 120 participants from 19 countries from as far away as Brazil, China, the UK, Japan, and Norway.

Lviv Hosts Winter Cup 2016 Dance Tournament

During December 24-25th Lviv played host to the Lviv Winter Cup-2016 Dance tournament which took place at Halychyna Sport Palace. As event’s organizer came Lviv’s Dance Club Foxtrot which managed to bring together over 300 dance couples from around Ukraine in various age categories.

Winter Fairy Tale 2016

Lviv’sHalychyna Sports Palace was home to over 350 Ukrainian rhythmic gymnasts on December 17-18 as part of the Winter Fairy Tale competition that traditionally marks the beginning of the holiday season.

Double Gold for Ukraine at FIDE World Rapid Chess Championships

Ukraine won both the men’s and women’s gold medals at the FIDE World Rapid Chess Championships in Doha, Qatar as both Vasyl Ivanchuk of Ternopil region and Lviv’s very-own Anna Muzychuk walked away on top after 3 days of play. The 26-year-old Muzychuk had an even finer weekend, retaining the World Blitz title that she won two years ago in Khanty-Mansiysk, while adding the World Rapid title to her already impressive resume. Anna is the older sister of former FIDE World Chess Champion MariyaMuzychuk, also of Lviv.

Lviv DanceSport Open Cup Championships

The Lviv DanceSport Open Cup Championships, organised by Lviv’s ‘Aelita’ dance club and the Ukrainian Sport Dance Association, were held at Lviv’s Gratsya Sport Complex at the Pivdenny mall on November 19-20.

Red Hot Shakhtar Caps Undefeated 2016 at Arena Lviv

Lviv’s adopted football stars Shakhtar Donetsk continued their magical Europa League play in 2016 with another victory at the city’s sparkling Arena Lviv. Having already secured qualification to the Europa League playoff round, the Miners still came out to convincingly discard Turkish side Konyaspor 4:0 in front of over 10,000 fans on November 24th.

Extreme Moto at Mayorivka

Lviv’s legendary Mayorivka racetrack played host to a series of motocross competitions on November 20th. Formerly renowned as one of Europe’s most difficult tracks, Mayorivka was recently reopened by motorcycle enthusiasts of Lviv’s ‘Drive’ club after nearly 20 years!

Lviv’s Inaugural Sumo Cup

Lviv’s Halychyna Sport Complex was the site of Lviv’s first-ever Sumo Open Cup on November 19th. Sumo is Japan’s national sport and is a traditional style of wrestling that originated out of a competition to entertain Japanese noblemen.

Ukraine’s Rugby 15 Championship

On October 29th, in Ukraine’s Rugby 15 Championship, Lviv’s “Sokil” played against “Podillya” (Khmelnitsky). Whole match was extremely tense, with several real fights between players, however local sportsmen were defeated with score 10–34, making main coach Yuriy Hrabovskyi truly very unhappy as the team lost chance to win bronze medal.

Grand Prix Lviv Half Marathon 2016

Lviv was host to the wonderful Grand Prix Lviv Half Marathon 2016 sports event on November 6th, sponsored by Molokija. The event was festively kicked off by Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi, who greeted the over 1300 runners, including many celebrities. Among the notable athletes involved were Maryna Filatova (spouse of Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov), MP Yehor Soboliev, 1+1 TV personality Marychka Padalko, and players from Lviv’s favourite football team – FC Karpaty.
