Karpaty victory ends Donetsk winning streak
Lviv’s talisman club Karpaty remain on track for a place in next season’s Europa League following a sensational Ukrainian Premier League victory over the all-conquering Galacticos of Shakhtar Donetsk. The billionaire Donbass side went into their mid-March clash with Lviv on the back of an unprecedented winning streak of 14 straight victories in all competitions stretching back to October 2010. However, they had not reckoned with Lviv’s fighting spirit and struggled to cope with the pressure cooker atmosphere created by a full house of Karpaty fans at the club’s imposing Ukraina Stadium. The decisive moment came early in the second half when Lviv’s recently arrived Romanian midfielder Razvan Cocis scored the only goal of the game following fantastic wing play from Karpaty fan favourite Ihor Khudobyak. Karpaty’s next home match will be against Mariupol side Illychivets on April 9. Tickets available at kiosks close to Ukraina Stadium.
