Lviv heroes relive Soviet Cup glory
On August 17 the veterans of Karpaty Lviv’s legendary 1969 Soviet Cup winning side came together for a nostalgic event that allowed them to reminisce about what remains the club’s single top honour. Lviv has never had a particularly strong local side, and throughout the Soviet era Karpaty drifted around outside of Soviet football’s top flight, which was dominated by the Moscow clubs and the representative sides from the various Soviet republics. However, this indifferent club history only serves to heighten the sense of triumph that is still attached to the heroes of Karpaty’s 1969 victory. A replica of the old Soviet Cup was produced specially for the event, allowing former players to relive their finest hour. The trophy will now reside in Lviv’s newly opened football museum inside the Lviv Art Palace (15, Kopernika Street).
