Issue 15, July 2009.

June saw the opening of Lviv’s first ever Football Exhibition (located inside Lviv Art Palace, Kopernyka str., 15) as the city’s preparations for Euro 2012 cranked up another gear. The exhibition featured a wide range of artefacts including cups, medals and trophies won by local sides and footballers hailing originally from Lviv. Although the city has never had a truly world-beating local side, Lviv remains the ancestral home of Ukrainian football and played host to the first recorded game in Ukrainian history, when a Lviv side beat their Krakow opponents in the late 19th century. Other famous Lviv-born players include former Dynamo captain and Arsenal star Oleh Luzhniy, who was known as ‘The Horse’ for his distinctive galloping style of play.
