Early February saw Lviv’s historic Rynok Square awash with young activists marking the 80th anniversary of the foundation of OUN, the controversial political organisation set up to fight for the idea of Ukrainian independence during the period of inter-war Polish rule in West Ukraine. More than 200 activists gathered in Lviv’s main square to spell out the initials of the political group, while event organisers handed out special scarves featuring the portrait of Ukrainian independence icon Stepan Bandera. In order to claim a free souvenir scarf, participants had to demonstrate their knowledge of Ukraine’s underground independence movement and its leaders, with those who answered correctly receiving the iconic items, and those who failed to come up to scratch being issued with information packs dealing with the major figures involved in the independence struggle.
