Lviv’s Football Heroes Saluted
On May 20 the great and the good of local football club Karpaty Lviv came together to celebrate two prominent anniversaries: the 45-year anniversary of the club’s foundation and the 10-year anniversary of Karpaty’s bronze medal finish in the 1997/1998 Ukrainian Premier League. Many former players and managers of the WestUkrainian talisman side attended the celebrations and participated in a friendly game which pitted veterans of the 1997-98 season against a Karpaty all-stars line-up which included players from the past forty-five years. Despite one of the strongest support bases in Ukrainian football Karpaty have struggled to emerge from the shadow of Dynamo Kyiv and, more recently, Shakhtar Donetsk, who continue to dominate the domestic game. Such are the struggles of the club that the 1998 third place finish is the best they have to look back on in over almost two decades of underachievement. The Karpaty all-stars team were led by Lev Brovarsky and Igor Kulchitsky, while ‘Bronze’ Karpaty were coached by Myron Markevich, Yury Dyachuk-Stavitsky and Vladimir Zhuravchik.
