Ukraine came of age as a nation state on August 24 as the country celebrated 18 years of independence, and as you would expect, Lviv was very much involved in festivities. Highlights included a giant floral map of Ukraine and the decoration of many of the city’s most iconic renaissance sculptures in traditional national Ukrainian dress. This popular holiday theme of dressing up statues in Ukrainian folklore attire has proved popular elsewhere in Ukraine, and has even been spotted in the capital city Kyiv on recent national holidays, making it another fun contribution Lviv has made to contemporary Ukrainian culture.
