As Ukraine reinvents itself as an independent country one of the areas that has come in for sustained revision has been Ukrainian history, with patriots declaring that the history taught in the country remains heavily influenced by foreign propaganda introduced by the Kremlin during the Soviet era. In a bid to counter this negative influence Lviv hosted a new holiday on May 24 to celebrate the country’s heroes, many of whom were airbrushed out of history by the Soviets or demonized as fascist collaborators and nationalists. Rehabilitated heroes included Stepan Bandera, Simon Petlura and Bohdan Dashkevich, all of who fought for Ukraine in its forgotten struggle for independence throughout the 20th century.
