Monatik in Lviv

Ukrainian singer, songwriter, and dancer Dmytro Monatik, known for his appearances on shows like X-Factor and Everybody Dance!, will be in Lviv on December 24th for a special solo performance at the Kino Event Hall. Known for his hits Now (Seichas), Smoke (Dym), and Quiet (Tykhyshe), Monatik is esteemed for his performance ability and his seasoned stage presence. His concerts are considered to be “electric” and full of emotion.

Year of the Monkey Exhibition

Lviv’s legendary Hrushevsky Jazz Improvisation Cinema will play host to a unique exhibition dedicated to the upcoming Year of the Monkey beginning from January 20th. In China, the Year of the Monkey is considered to be ideal for a quantum leap forward in life! It offers the opportunity to shake things up, create change, and begin a new life path. In many Chinese cities, pictures of monkeys are placed to invite good fortune.

Tango Remolino DJ Festival

Snow Without Break – Pavlo Tabakov

No holiday season would be complete without Christmas tunes and Leopolitans and guests of the city will be pleased to hear that Lviv-native Pavlo Tabakov – the popular singer and winner of the Voice of the Nation TV show – will bring his holiday concert program Snow Without Break to Lviv’s chic M. Zankovetska Drama Theatre on January 3rd.

KIZZ UP Kizomba Festival

Lviv is set to host its very first KIZZ UP Kizomba Festival from January 15-17. Originating in Angola and resembling the French-Caribbean zouk, Kizomba is a dance that combines sensuality with romantic African rhythms. KIZZ UP will gather a dazzling array of the finest kizomba artists and dancers around for over 40 hours of workshops, parties, and dancing. Festivalgoers can expect to see the likes of Belarus’ Kristina Shatalova, Latvia’s Oksana Bogomolna, and Ukraine’s Andrei Bessonov (Kharikiv) and Alex Yakovenko (Kyiv).

Tina Karol – one of Ukraine’s most famous pop stars – will bring a festive holiday program, featuring a mix of Christmas classics and her favourite songs, to Lviv’s luxurious Opera & Ballet Theatre on January 5th! Karol was once just a chubby teenager crooning in a school choir; but by 25 she landed on the covers of many of the most coveted glamour magazines as one of the most beautiful and popular singers in the country.

A Spider for Christmas?

Fastidious housewives usually shoo spiders and their webs from the corners of the house, or from their hiding places in furniture. But in Ukraine, what says Christmas more than a spider and its spider web? Well, considering that Ukrainian holiday traditions include such memorable and special seasonal symbols as poppy seeds, garlic, stalks of wheat, and even cross-dressing (for special travelling Christmas plays called Vertep) – why not include the “pavuk” (spider).

Andriy Porodko is at the same time the Director of the SAMI charitable organisation, Head of the organising committee of Charitable Lvivshyna, a member of the Ukrainian Benefactors Association, a caring father, and simply a very positive person. He understands full well the value of life, as he managed to beat a serious oncological disease early in life. That is why he dedicates himself so wholeheartedly to children in Lviv and the region. Andriy helps many children at orphanages and boarding schools. He arranges art therapy workshops for children with leukemia, organises festivals, and brings to life many different social projects and initiatives to help children in need. Many students at Lviv’s specialised boarding schools are grateful to Andriy for the always entertaining Special Olympics sports competition and the Lutyn youth social festival.

Ukrainian President Pays Working Visit to Lviv

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko paid a working visit to Lviv on November 14th to meet with Slovenian President Borut Pahor and discuss the security situation in Europe, particularly in the context of the recent terror attacks in Paris. Mr. Poroshenko also took part in a ceremony at the International Peacekeeping Centre in Yavoriv where the Armed Forces of Ukraine received U.S. radar stations.

‘Classic for Peace’

The INSO-Lviv Academic Youth Symphony Orchestra played a special ‘Classic for Peace’ concert at Kyiv’s prestigious Taras Shevchenko National Opera & Ballet Theatre on November 15th. The event was organised by the Belgium embassy and the Lviv Philharmonic Theatre to mark the Belgian holiday King’s Day. Each November 15th since 1866, Belgium has celebrated King’s Day to mark its linguistic, political, and cultural diversity. This year’s events were meant to show that intercultural understanding and acceptance are vital for peace and sustainable development.

City Council Deputies Take Oath

The first session of the newly elected Lviv City Council was held on November 24th. Lasting less than an hour, the meetings saw the newly elected deputies take an oath to serve in the best interests of Ukraine.
