Bessarabian Culture Days in Lviv

Leopolitans and guests of the city were treated to a festive cultural tribute during the Bessarabian Culture Days in Lviv on October 17-18. The Ukrainian Bessarabian region, located in the south near the Odesa region, is known for the peaceful coexistence of its many cultures, including: Ukrainians, Bulgarians, Moldovans, Albanians, and Jewish. Visitors to the event were entertained with several concerts, presentations, and exhibitions.

5’nizza Reunion Concert

Leopolitan reggae fans will be pleased to hear that Andrey Zaporzhets and Sergey Babkin of the classic Ukrainian reggae group 5’nizza will be in Lviv on December 4th to perform some of their greatest hits at the Ukraine Sport Palace. Created in Kharkiv in 2000, the band’s hits could be heard in every apartment building and yard across the country in the first part of the decade. The group went their separate ways back in 2007 and are pleased to have reunited earlier this year.

Belarusian Brutto in Concert

Lviv’s Ukraine Sports Palace is set to host Belarusian punk rockers Brutto in a special concert on November 21st. Brutto was formed last year by Siarhei Mikhalok and is the successor to the legendary Belarussian rock band Lyapis Trubestskoy. Mikhalok is a rock star and actor best known for creating the band Lyapis Trubetskoy. He has also worked in theatre and as art director of a famous reggae club in Minsk. He has shown his comedic chops as a member of the comic duo Sasha i Sirozha and was part of Liavon Volski’s Krambambula music project.

Time to Go Home With Svitlana Loboda

The daring and mysterious Svitlana Loboda promises to wow crowds at Lviv’s Opera & Ballet Theatre with a major concert on November 25th. Loboda is a popular Ukrainian singer and composer who represented the country at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2009 (finishing 12th). In 2004, she beat out nearly 500 rivals to win a coveted spot in the band Via Gra – Ukraine’s answer to the Spice Girls. Like other stars from the group, Loboda has departed from the iconic all-girl group to launch her own career. Since then, the blonde bombshell has forged a credible career in her own right with three albums and several successful singles.

Teulis Shadow Theatre

The Teulis Shadow Theatre, a world famous and award-winning shadow play theatre, will bring their talents to Lviv’s Mariya Zankovetska National Drama Theatre on December 7th. The Teulis Shadow Theatre is a space where even the dark silhouettes are able to play with bright colours in a palette where there is no place for stencils, templates, or imposters. Only the skills of the actors – theatre artists, dancers, and circus professionals – create wonders on the stage. Their techniques defy human capabilities and break the boundaries between genres.

Patriotic Ballet by Zhyttya

Iryna Mazur’s Zhyttya ballet is bringing their powerful Reminiscences.UA show to Lviv for three performances on November 21st and 22nd. The ballet was well received when it premiered at the Lviv Opera House back in May. This wonderful two-hour show has found a new artistic language to describe several centuries of the destruction of the Ukrainian intelligentsia and Russification of Ukraine – especially during the 20th Century. This spectacle highlights some unknown, and even terrifying, facts of Ukrainian history and culture. It consists of 10 novels, and several private stories, that unravel complicated dilemmas of life, leaving the audience to draw their own conclusions. Reminiscences.UA tells of war, fear, repression, and death, as well as faith, love, hope, and struggle for Ukraine.

Jazz Bez Festival

What began as a weekend of jazz in Lviv back in 2000 has evolved into one of Western Ukraine’s most highly anticipated musical events of the winter. Over the years, Jazz Bez has grown quickly and now attracts many international names to go along with its amateur musicians. Larger and larger crowds attend each year and the festival has responded by stretching beyond traditional jazz to respond to the new audiences. It has expanded beyond its initial outdoor venue into several indoor satellite events and late night jam sessions that have become synonymous with the festival itself.

Nino Katamadze & INSIGHT

Lviv’s picturesque Opera & Ballet Theatre is the perfect locale for the Nino Katamadze & INSIGHT concert entitled Razom (Together) that will be held on November 17th. Nino Katamadze & INSIGHT feature a complex, intelligent and otherworldly music experience for lovers of serious art. Their songs evoke thoughts of the eternity of life, of thinking, compassion, and hope. Their art is an insight into all that is the complexity of life.

Wiener Johann Strauß Konzert-Gala

The K&K Philharmoniker Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Austrian composer and conductor Matthias Georg Kendlinger, invites Leopolitan fans of classical music and guests of the city to the special “Wiener Johann Strauß Konzert-Gala" being held on December 1st and 2nd at Lviv’s S. Ludkevich Philharmonic Concert Hall.

ManSound in Concert

ManSound – one of Ukraine’s most notable a capella bands – will play a concert for Leopolitan music fans and guests of the city at Lviv’s Philharmonic Concert Hall on November 25th. A capella music may never have been the most popular genre, but at least it allows for musicians to filter out the amateurs, allowing for only the finest voices to remain. In this regard, the ManSound sextet has emerged as one of Ukraine’s most talented vocal groups. Working without instrumentation of any sort, the six men cover all manner of genres – from classical to contemporary. Well respected in jazz circles worldwide, they bring their sound to the Western Ukrainian capital later this month.

An unforgettable night of traditional Georgian dance accompanied by national melodies awaits the attendants of the Georgian National Dance and Music Ensemble Erisioni’s concert, scheduled for December 02 in Lviv Opera and Ballet Theatre.

Once again Lviv will stay lively all night long as the autumn version of the popular “Lviv Nights” will last for three glorious December nights from the 4th to the 6th. Night owls will have plenty to choose from as over 100 establishments – from one end of Lviv to the other – will be staying open until the wee hours to give the Western Ukrainian capital city a festive buzz to kick off the holiday season.

Leopolitan computer graphic fans and guests of the city should mark December 5th in their calendars as the ART-Pixel CG Conference returns to the city. This must-see event brings together creative types interested in animation, advertising, game design, and digital graphics to develop the computer graphics industry in Lviv and across Ukraine.

Max Barskih Presents “I Want to Dance”

Lviv’s KINO Event Hall is the place to be on December 10th as Max Barskih will present his “I Want to Dance” concert to Leopolitans and guests of the city. Barskih made his debut in 2008 at the Ukrainian Star Factory 2 (Fabrika Zirok 2) talent show. By 2010, he was already nominated for Best Performer at Ukraine’s MTV Europe Music Awards.

Champions League: Shakhtar vs. Real Madrid

Ukrainian powerhouse Shakhtar Donetsk, playing at home here in Lviv for the second season, faces a tall order in trying to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League for the fourth time in the last six seasons. The team needs to knock off two of the top teams in Europe – Real Madrid at home on November 25th and Paris Saint-Germaine next month in Paris – to have any chance of qualifying for knockout stages.

An exciting event happened in Lviv on November 7th, when one of Ukraine’s leading designers – Andre Tan – opened up his own boutique – aTaN by ANDRE TAN at Forum. The event showcased the designer’s latest fashion collection: Fall/Winter 2015-16. Andre Tan personally commented on each outfit during each model’s pass, sharing secrets and giving tips on how it’s possible to place emphasis on the advantages of good stature and conceal problem zones of a figure using clothing.

Touching the Great Ones

Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko, Lesia Ukrainka, Mariya Zankovetska, Serhii Nihoyan, Andrei Sheptytsky, Georgy Gongadze – a total of 12 sculptural portraits of some of Ukraine’s most prominent historical figures were presented at the Seeing by Touching: Great Ukrainians art exhibition at Lviv’s Art Palace from November 1-8. By being able to touch the art, people with limited vision could get an idea of how the outstanding political and public figures looked. Audio information and stories on each person was played nearby and was recorded by celebrated Ukrainian musicians, including Jamala, Pavlo Tabakov, and Lviv’s-own Sviatoslav Vakarchuk. Texts were also available in braille.

The Art of Help

Lviv’s chic Hrushevsky jazz cinema was the scene for “The Art of Help” charitable fundraiser for the Sanitation dental project on October 13th. The project was initiated by the Ukrainian Dental Association to provide support and medical assistance to dentists working at the Yavoriv military training area. The event showcased and auctioned off specially-painted wooden boxes that were formerly used for pistols and other armaments. Organisers wished to show that even ordinary things such as wooden boxes can be turned into creative art pieces. Many leading Ukrainian artists took part in the initiative, including Roksolana Shafran, Ivanka Voytovych, Lev Skop, Natalka Bartkiv, and Ostap Loyznskzyi.

Lviv Fashion Week: Spring/Summer 2016

The always glamourous Lviv Fashion Week showcased Spring and Summer 2016’s most elegant ensembles from October 29 – November 1 at the Danylo Halytskyi International Airport and several other locations across the city. Featuring shows by the who’s who of Ukrainian fashion – including Roksolana Bogutska, Oksana Mukha, Lesia Semi, Natalia Grechana, and Lviv’s-own Steblakizm – the event drew a sophisticated and attractively attired audience throughout the week. In addition to the enchanting catwalk presentations, other event highlights included the presentation of Lesia Semi’s new DIVINE perfume, of Zenovia Tkanko’s new book Fashion in Ukraine in the 20th Century, and a lecture by fashion critic Zoya Zvynyatskivska.

Chocolate Fest Returns to Lviv

For three days in mid-October Leopolitans and guests of the city were treated to some of the tastiest chocolate products from Ukraine’s finest confectionary producers at Chocolate Fest at the Lviv Art Palace. Festivalgoers were able to participate in workshops put on by professional chocolatiers, watch as succulent sculptures were formed from giant blocks of chocolate, and taste the finest chocolates that Lviv and Ukraine have to offer. As part of the events, the annual amateur confectionary chef contest was held. Olga Chetyrbuk’s mouth-watering chocolate truffle recipe won over the judges as she topped the other contestants for first prize.

Lviv Savours its Cheese & Wine Festival

Leopolitan foodies and guests of the city were in for a treat last month, as one of the city’s most anticipated culinary events – the annual Cheese & Wine Festival – returned to Lviv on October 18-20. Festivalgoers learned about cheese-making culture and wine-making traditions while devouring delicious cheeses and tasty wines from some of Ukraine’s most renowned manufacturers and local artisans. Culinary workshops took place alongside concerts by local musicians. Other festival highlights included: a special art exhibition of paintings made with wine; Inkerman wine tastings at the cozy Dominikanes coffee shop; and Sergiy Tkachyuk’s Wine Cork Art Style fashion show that featured outfits and accessories made out of wine corks.

Marketing Seminar by HD Partners

The “Marketing in the Period of Uncertainty” seminar, the fourth in a series organised by the HD Partners Legal and Gold Ideas Advertising firms, was held at the Panska Gora Hotel’s conference room on October 15th. The event brought together marketing specialists, brand managers, and owners of leading advertising agencies in Western Ukraine to discuss why marketing communications are important, how to establish them, and to look at marketing strategies for creating value. In recognition of this important topic, the event drew over 250 participants from Lviv, Volyn, Ivano-Frankivsk, Khmelnytskyi, and Ternopil regions.
