The princess of Ukrainian pop Tina Karol will come to Lviv this month with a fresh concert programme promoting her new album which is expected to hit the streets in November. Karol shot to fame at the age of 21 as winner of the annual New Wave talent contest in Latvia — a post-Soviet hangover from the old days which continues to exert significance on the CIS pop scene.

Lviv recently welcomed a new tourist attraction on a tiny scale — the region’s first exhibition of model castles. The eight featured fortifications are all models produced to a 1;50 scale and based on the most famous castles of the West Ukrainian region and its traditional borderlands.

Like so many talented instrumentalists of his generation, he has also branched and founded an orchestra which he conducts. He has never abandoned the viola, managing to split his time in even portions between soloist and conductor, often appearing in both roles in the same concert. He has performed with the world’s leading orchestras, including those in Moscow, Berlin, Paris, New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and many other locales.

In a bid to combat a rising tide of alcoholically fuelled anti-social behaviour in the city, the Lviv authorities recently unveiled new regulations restricting the sale of alcohol from 22.00 until 10.00 daily. The new regulations, which will not affect licensed premises such as bars and restaurants but will instead target kiosks, convenience stores and supermarkets, are part of broader efforts in Lviv to address the problem of alcohol abuse and make the city a more pleasant place to be at night. Retailers have promised to challenge the legality of the new regulations in the courts, but the move has been warmly received by cultural figures and tourism sector representatives who see it as a civilizing step towards modern European norms.

LVIV TATOOS: ART & EROTICISM

Lviv Art Palace was the venue this September for the city’s annual fluorescent art show, Lviv Lumines, which this year featured a special focus on body art. Tatoos have always been popular in Lviv and the subculture of body art remains one of the most fascinating aspects of the entire Gulag experience of many Ukrainians during the totalitarian Soviet regime.

It’s official — Leopolitans are simply crazy about dolls and never more so than if they happen to be dressed in cute little folk costumes and ethnic Ukrainian garb! That was the conclusive verdict this September as the second annual ‘Doll World’ exhibition (held at Lviv’s Museum of Ethnography) showcased the works over 100 traditional doll makers from across Ukraine.
