Happy birthday independent Ukraine!

Issue 26, July 2010.
Thanks to the country’s new geopolitical trajectory and the current administration’s revivalist approach to bilateral ties with the Kremlin, Ukraine’s Independence Day celebrations this August will likely carry added political potency and symbolism. But while parades and pomposity are likely to dominate proceedings in the capital city Kyiv, Leopolitans will be treated to a more cultured holiday programme which reflects Lviv’s status as modern Ukraine’s spiritual capital. Ukraine’s independence holiday celebrates the declaration which the country’s Soviet-era legislature issued on August 24, 1991 following the failure of a KGB coup in Moscow. By the summer of 1991 the Soviet empire was in total disarray, with Mikhail Gorbachev’s attempts to reform the USSR from within having resulted in a collapse of central authority and unleashed a Pandora’s Box of pent-up grievances against the totalitarian regime. Eastern Europe had been lost in the previous two years, and instability was seeping into the heart of empire. In this environment of imperial disintegration Ukraine’s declaration of independence was actually just one of many and as a result it came to be seen by some as merely a fait accompli rather than the final stage in a glorious struggle for national sovereignty.

Horror of the Horns

Issue 26, July 2010.
Since the very start of the World Cup in South Africa global audiences have been treated to a barrage of noise which has proved equally irritating to viewers in every continent. This tuneless racket has been produced by thousands of ‘vuvuzela’ plastic horns which South African fans blow continuously throughout games, thereby robbing the World Cup of its more traditional crowd accompaniment. There are now fears that the rise of the vuvuzela, albeit fleeting and utterly gimmicky in nature, may nevertheless lead to a resurgent in brainless horn-blowing at Ukrainian football matches just in time to ruin the atmosphere at Euro 2012.

Lviv’s Ethno Fest Summer of Love

Issue 26, July 2010.
Any budding social anthropologists searching for the key to a modern Ukrainian national identity need look no further than the country’s flourishing ethno-folk subculture. This eco-friendly and somewhat pastoral passion for ancient Ukrainian styles, riffs and motifs is visible in everything from pop music to high street fashions, but nowhere more so than when traversing the annual summer season of Ukrainian ethno festivals. These fun and unpretentious outdoor festivals have been attracting increasingly large numbers from all age brackets for the past decade to what are essentially celebrations of an eternal Ukrainian spirit which transcends the grubby politics of the post-independence age. Fittingly, this folklore fiesta phenomenon has its roots in West Ukraine and remains very much centred on the country’s unofficial cultural capital, Lviv
