Come back of old guards - «Fort.Missia-2009»

During July, 10-12 in Lviv region will be launched new experimental and original festival «Fort.Missia-2009». First World War unique defensive forts on Ukraine-Poland border close to Popovytchi village (near town of Shegyni) will host festival activities. It will be possible to get on this territory only one time in a year and only in a festival period.

International Music Festival “Stare Selo”

Festival “Stare Selo” will be held from 17th to 19th July in the village Stare Selo, which is located only 22 kilometres from the city. Picturesque, romantic and legendary old castle – one of the biggest of Ukraine, will host three days of non-stop music festival. List of participants is sensational, featuring talented masters of world’s best dance floors, who are about to rock on Ukraine in July!

Statistical Physics: Modern Trends and Applications, International Conference, June 23-25, Institute of Condensed Matter Physics This keynote scientific event is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Professor Mykola Bogolubov, the Ukrainian scientist whose work did much to develop the field of quantum physics. An exhibition about the life and scientific activities of Bogolyubov will be presented during the conference. This exhibition is intended to be mobile and to remain on display until September 2009, during which time it will go on tour and be exhibited to audiences across Ukraine.

On June 1st Poland’s First Lady Maria Kaczynska visited Lviv and took part in celebrations to mark the second annual Polish-Ukrainian Children’s Day dedicated to International Child Protection Day. Mrs. Kaczynska comes from a family of former Polish nobles in Lithuania and so has a sentimental attachment to the formerly Polish cities which were swallowed up by the Soviet Union in 1939, making her trip to Lviv especially poignant.

President Offers Encouragement Ahead of Euro 2012

President Yushchenko paid a one-day visit to Lviv in late May to check up on how the city’s preparations for Euro 2012 are progressing. European football’s governing body UEFA has given Ukraine’s host cities until November 30 to bring their preparations up to speed or risk losing the right to co-host the tournament, and at present Lviv’s stadium remains one of the biggest causes for concern.

Connecting Lviv to the European Mainline!

Early June saw the launch of a revolutionary rail service linking Lviv with the Polish cities Krakow and Wroclaw and featuring new technologies that allow for massive reductions on the time spent readjusting wagons to meet the requirements of European railway gauges. Until recently all trains leaving the former Soviet Union and entering the European Union were subject to long delays as wagon wheels were changed in a painstaking process that could take upwards of three hours and involved significant manpower.
