World famous mass-media projects star Erwin Redl will attend Lviv

Redl's works have received attention both nationally and internationally. With his piece Matrix VI, he lit the face of New York's Whitney Museum of American Art for its 2002 Biennial Exhibit. Works such as Matrix II, which was shown in New York, Germany, France, Austria, and Korea, and Fade I, which animated the Eglise Sainte-Marie Madeleine in Lille, France, explore volume and allow people to move through lit spaces.

Begin Spring with an Elegant Ball Spring Ball, April 25, House of Scientists, Lviv As Lviv celebrates the start of the spring season, the high society set will gather in late April for the fifth annual Spring Ball at the city’s elegant House of Scientists. The ball will be hosted by King Lev and Queen Constance in line with ancient Lviv traditions based on archival evidence which outlined the protocol of a 1482 ball held to mark the arrival in medieval Lviv (then known as Leopolis) of a royal French delegation. 00

Will Lviv Become a Regional Outsourcing Focus?

A recent report produced by leading global professional services firm KPMG identified 31 cities world-wide which look set to become the “destinations to watch” for the next outsourcing wave, and Lviv was the only Ukrainian city to make it onto the list. KPMG specialists have indicated that the rush for new outsourcing centres is the result of two major factors: the credit crisis seems to have encouraged companies to consider outsourcing, while the traditional locations have approached their saturation point.

Despite the current global downturn these are exciting times for Lviv, thanks in large part to ambitious plans to develop the city’s infrastructure in order to meet the demands the growing tourist trade and burgeoning investment climate. One of the centre-piece projects of the current wave of citywide rejuvenation is the plan to develop Lviv’s airport into an international hub capable of accommodating the hundreds of thousands of visitors expected to fly into the city for Euro 2012.

Exploring Lviv’s Rich Theatrical Tradition

This month see’s International Theatre Day, making this the ideal time to explore Lviv’s long tradition as a focus of Ukrainian theatre. Many elements of Lviv’s theatrical inheritance can be traced in ancient Ukrainian folk customs and rites, with many of today’s theatircal customs dating back to pagan traditions and rituals. These are especially evident in the Spring vesnianky songs, the summer Kupalo festival, winter carols and above all in the ceremony of the Ukrainian wedding. Elements of all these traditions are upheld by Lviv’s many theatres, where the best traditions of international theatre are also in evidence.

An exhibition dedicated to Ukraine’s national bard Taras Shevchenko opened at Lviv’s Art Palace opened March 3 featuring rare works of art produced by the famed former slave during his period of political exile in Tsarist Kazakhstan.

Celebrating Lviv’s Rotary Tradition

February 23 saw members of Lviv’s Rotary club mark the 104th anniversary of the international organisation’s foundation. Lviv’s Rotary pedigree dates back to the 1930s during the inter-war period of Polish rule, but this brief period of Rotary Club activity was cut short by the arrival in 1939 of Soviet forces, who invaded West Ukraine at the beginning of WWII in line with the terms of the notorious Molotov-Ribbentrop pact of alliance between Hitler and Stalin.

Restoration Work Returns Lviv Region Gem to its Former Glory

The end of February saw one of West Ukraine’s most romantic fairytale castles showcased to the public following many long years of restoration work. Since the 1990s work has been ongoing at Zolochiv Castle, with donations from Canada’s sizable Ukrainian diaspora and local businessman Petro Pysarchuk helping to overcome chronic state funding shortages and return this magnificent structure to its former glory.

On February 28 Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko and his Polish counterpart Lech Kachinsky participated in a joint ceremony to mark the opening of a memorial to the estimated 1000 Poles who died 65 years ago during military operations in the village of Huta Penyatska, which is located in the Brodovsky area of Lviv Oblast.
